I have heard people say, “The Holy Spirit is a gentleman, he only comes when invited.” Paul didn’t ask for this encounter with God, it was just Boom! Jesus did say how much more will I give the Holy Spirit to those who ask, but sometimes, God in his sovereignty just touches someone.

I have had many shepherds in my life, some wonderful, caring men of God, and others who have used the rod and the staff in a damaging way. God still raises up Shepherds to lead his people today, just as he did with Moses and Joshua.
I remember doing woodwork at school. They showed us how you can go with the grain of the wood or against it. Going against it is harder and messier and just doesn’t feel right.
Some people think that the disciples were just nice and gentle and spreading the love like the hippies in the 60’s movement. Here is Peter, who spent 3 years following Jesus absolutely everywhere, filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit and he says this to a new convert! Charles Wesley wrote a hymn called, “Gentle, Jesus meek and mild.” He is, but he’s also “Firey, Jesus bold and wild!”
