I have no one quite like Timothy. He is loyal, and genuinely concerned for you. Most people around here are looking out for themselves, with little concern for the things of Jesus. But you know yourselves that Timothy’s the real thing. He’s been a devoted son to me as together we’ve delivered the Message. Philippians 2:9
What a great rap for Timmy! He has good fruit. I remember my wife Carol once saying to me that one thing she detested was insincerity. Here Paul is saying that Timothy is sincere about his concern for the Philippians. Interesting that he also says “Most people around here are looking out for themselves, with little concern for the things of Jesus.” Sounds a bit like the 21st century church too. There’s a lot of people with their own agenda and their own interests at heart, just like the world. But this passage from beginning of chapter 2 is all in the context of how Jesus took on the nature of a servant, forgetting about yourself and living selfless and obedient.
I think about the men of God I have served alongside over the years. I’ve tried to be loyal and to show genuine concern for people. I don’t know if my reputation would be as healthy as Timothy’s is here. It’s a high standard, but one we need to aim for. Paul said “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” In the same way I need to look to Paul and Timothy and the example they have set, and imitate.
Lord, help me turn my heart to continually be concerned with the things you would have me do. Help me be a blessing to those who lead me and to those we are serving in ministry wherever we go. Give me your heart for the Lost, the broken and the lonely, show me how to Love with your Love. Lead me on Holy Spirit! In Jesus name, Amen.
