Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Mark 15:37-38
I’ve heard the story of Christ’s crucifixion so many times. I’ve preached on it, studied it and seen it dramatized. I’ve even seen the movie! I have to be careful never to become numb to the significance of this day. This moment that split time in half.
Mark clearly mentions the curtain tearing straight after the point of death. When you realise the amount of effort that went into the sacrifices under the Old Covenant, this shows how much of a big deal this really is.
Yesterday I dropped my son off to school, and driving home I prayed and realised I’d spent the whole morning without speaking to Him. It was only 9am, but I want to live 24/7 in communion with Him. That’s what was made available to me, in that moment when the curtain was torn: full access via the blood of Christ.
Obviously if I just prayed out loud all day, and ignored people, I wouldn’t connect well with those around me. But I want to be aware of His presence: listening to Him, meditating on His promises, seeking Him first. They say the key to a successful prayer life is to set aside times to pray, and have a focus on what you are praying for. I want that to be my minimum. I always try to pray in my meetings with people and shoot up arrow prayers whenever I get the chance.
Father, thank you for tearing the curtain; I want to live in the Holy of Holies all day long. I fix my eyes on you Lord Jesus. Amen.
